The scope of the intervention is to alleviate negative symptoms related to specific deficiencies, by inducing well-specified neuroplastic changes; targeting thus, the neurobiological background of these deficiencies. The target groups for the transational aspects of MusicPlast include yound adolescents with dyslexia and elderlies with mild cognitive impairment, as recent scientific evidence support that for these groups such an intervention would induce beneficial changes.
In more detail, MusicPlast developed a web-based protocol of multisensory training, causing neuroplastic changes on fronto-temporal regions of the cortex. This protocol is based upon a simplified version of musical reading training, provided by a web-based serious game. The training, being based on music, will utilize the emotionally rewarding effects of music and thus motivate the engagement of the subjects, while at the same time it will exploit the exceptional neuroplastic effects of multisensory learning.
The project incorporates multidisciplinary characteristics by requiring the integration of neuroscientific techniques with cognitive psychology, neuropsychology, musicological and educational principles and signal processing. Specifically, electroencephalographic, behavioral and neuropsychological measurements, and advanced data analysis procedures, pre- and post the training application are going to be employed in order to evaluate the resulting neuroplasticity holistically.
